Message from Place 4U

I write to you on behalf of Place4u. We are a local charity focused on delivering a range of services to a diverse social group in our locality. I have included a brief outline of the project, its background and our aims and goals. The building that we are redeveloping dates from the 18th Century and will provide for a much needed youth cafe and facilities for the older generations. Additional services will include allowing for discreet and private meeting facilities for such groups as the AA, Bereavement counselling and many others, it will serve as a location for separated parents to bring their children to. These services along with other facilities will be a major social and practical asset for the town for future generations and we need support to achieve the same.

To achieve this end we are engaged in a wide series of fundraising events and the current major fundraiser is our "Recession Buster Draw”. The prizes are exceptional and interesting and we would greatly welcome the opportunity to discuss your possible support for the draw and the project overall.

Please feel free to contact either Michael Campbell (086 2587565), Senator Phil Prendergast (086 8555472) or myself Don Davern (086 2509015).

Project Background

The Place4u project is based in a disused but listed building in the town centre; this building has donated by the parish of St Peters and Pauls for the benefit of the entire town. The objective of the project is to refurbish the building and in the first instance to create a centre and youth café that would benefit the younger generations with a safe and secure location to meet and interact. This café will have a dual purpose incorporating a meeting place for older generations, allowing this generation to a have secure and comfortable haven in the town. It is the aim of this project to promote positive interaction between the generations creating respect and a transfer of the oral history and traditions of the town to the younger generations.

This project is the town of Clonmel coming together to work for the people of the town. It is of the town, by the town and for the town. It is commonly acknowledged that Clonmel has been deficient in social enterprise and community, this project will address this lack of social cohesion by building a project that will last for many generations and will benefit all. It will hopefully set a template for the greater promotion of social enterprise in the town thus enhancing the town and the social fabric of the town.

The charity is made up of all social and economic strata of Clonmel. This is the first time that all of the social elements of the town have come together to work on this project for the benefits of the town. The building is in a state of disrepair and is also a listed building compounding the restoration and refurbishment costs. When finished however the building will provide café and related services to both the youth of the town and the older generations in safe and secure environment. This joint usage will be designed to create a positive interaction and hopefully foster clearer understanding and respect.

The building will also create support services for such charities and organisations as SVP, AA, Bereavement Counselling and will provide rooms for parents who are estranged from the family home and require a place to meet with their children other than McDonalds.  The services that we plan to provide are not in the town or county for any of the sectors that we have identified.

There is no project similar, there has no greater gift to the town in living memory in terms of the building and its value. It is incumbent on all of us to deliver on this fantastic opportunity and to leave behind a project that benefits all.
