Clonmel Chamber Welcomes Appointment of Minister Hanafin to Tourism Portfolio
Clonmel Chamber has welcomed the appointment of Mary Hanafin to the Department of Tourism, Culture & Arts.
“Tourism is a key contributor to the economy, employing over 200,000 people and it is heartening to see such an experienced Minister being given responsibility for developing the sector” said Clonmel Chamber President Tina Mulhearne. “Clonmel Chamber has been working on a major tourism initiative over the last twelve months and we are hoping to continue the work with the launch of the 2010 Discover Clonmel brochure. South Tipperary, and in particular Clonmel, has a rich history and amazing amenities to offer to tourists and I believe that it is something that we need to develop further. We have already engaged in discussions with Fáilte Ireland about the potential to develop this area for the domestic market and we will continue to work to keep Clonmel on the tourist agenda” she added.
The President of the Chamber went on to say “I am sure that Minister Hanafin will see the economic benefits associated with the development of the tourist sector in this area and we will be writing to her with suggestions on how Clonmel Chamber can play a part in this”.
In 2009 Clonmel Chamber published the ‘Discover Clonmel’ tourist brochure, which was widely distributed throughout Ireland. The Chamber is currently preparing the 2010 brochure and is also organising Style Clonmel Festival 7th – 17th October 2010 where it aims to significantly increase out of town visitors this year.
