Following last Monday nights public meeting regarding the downgrading of South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel Chamber has come together with the Association of Clonmel Traders to hold an open meeting for all business owners in Clonmel to discuss how the business community can work to prevent the downgrading of the Clonmel facility.
South Tipperary General Hospital is a significant contributor to the local economy employing over 800 people in Clonmel. Experts believe that no more than 400 jobs would remain at the site following downgrading. This would have a significant effect on the local economy. More importantly it would leave the town without meaningful hospital services. We at Clonmel Chamber believe that this is not acceptable and that it would exacerbate the decline of the town. Peter Merchant a consultant at South Tipperary General Hospital spoke at length about the impact of the downgrading on business in Clonmel. He believes that Clonmel would no longer be a viable location for investment and that the town itself would effectively be downgraded.
We are urging members of the business community to join us at the Clonmel Park Hotel on Wednesday next the 24th of February at 6.15pm for this open meeting to discuss how the business community can play a role in preventing the downgrading of services. Consultant Dr. Paud O’Regan will speak at the meeting as will members of the Chamber and the Traders Organisation
